MAKER'S MARK CYRILLIC 'C.B', MOSCOW, CIRCA 1783
Of traditional form with raised prow and handle, the bowl repoussé with a circular reserve centring an Imperial double-headed eagle with the orb and sceptre and engraved with the monogram of Empress Catherine II on stippled ground, within repoussé ribbon-tied laurel border, the exterior sides engraved with Cyrillic dedication inscription 'Presented by Empress Ekaterina II [Catherine the Great] to Afanasii Popov, ataman of the Don Voisko for his service on 1 April 1783' within scrolling foliate reserves, the front engraved with the portrait of Catherine the Great in profile below the Imperial crown, the shaped handle densely repoussé with scrolling foliage and rocaille and engraved with the crowned monogram of Empress Catherine II, the finial cast and chased as the Imperial double-headed eagle, marked on handle
