Vasili Dimitrevich Polenov
Vasili Dimitrevich Polenov, 1844-1927 calvary signed oil on canvas During the Russo-Turkish war Polenov was attached, as an official war artist, to the entourage of the Tsarevich Alexander Alexandrovich. In 1884, he visited Constantinople, Syria, Egypt and Palestine where he painted a series of scenes from the life of Christ, one of which is the offered lot. Another painting from this series, of the Woman Taken in Adultery, which was completed in 1888, was acquired by the Emperor for the Museum of Russian art which opened in St. Petersburg in 1896 under the name of the Russian Museum of Alexander III.
