In mammoth ivory, the figure of Peter I loosely based on the famous "Bronze Horseman" monument of St. Petersburg in which Peter's horse vanquishes a serpent; Catherine II depicted riding sidesaddle holding the orb of rule in one hand and with emblems of learning beneath her mount; both on ebonized wood plinths inlaid with ivory decoration
