Made for liturgical use, the silver gilt cover repousse and chased on both sides: the front with ornate festoons and applied with five enamel plaques (3 damaged) with paste surrounds, the central plaque depicting The Resurrection, the others with portraits of the Evangelists, the formal border of stylized foliage; the reverse repousse and chased in high relief with The Temple, within whose draped arches are shown the Mother of God raised on an ambo, flanked by David and Solomon, and with God the Father shown above within a cloud-borne mandala, with four applied capstan shaped supports; two engraved clasps, maker’s mark J.?.G. Moscow 1802, the spine, clasps and edges replaced when the present Gospel was added during the late 19th century.
