A large Icon of the Monk Saint Ephraem the Syrian
18th Century, overpainted during the 19th Century. A poet and theologian, St. Ephraem was born at Nisibis, Mesopotamia circa 306, dying at Edessa in 373. His hymn compositions are still much used in the Syrian Church and his reputation spread to the Greek speaking world before his death. A number of English hymns are translations from St. Ephraems Syriac.
