The Deisis

Add to collection

Three rectangular panels painted with the standing figures of The Saviour, the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, Moscow, third quarter of the 16th Century, the gilding and inscriptions have been replaced during the 19th Century; the garments on two of the panels have been over cleaned, thus uncovering the underlying initial definitive drawing (proris). Complete sets of The Deisis have now become rare due to the continuous dispersal of icons during the 20th Century.
