The holy moneyless ones, depicted holding their medicine chests; encased in a parcel gilt engine-turned oklad, makers mark I.N., Moscow 1893. Cosmas and Damian were brothers born in Rome in the 3rd century and received the gift of healing. They asked for no money from those that they cured, only that they believe in Christ. They also healed animals. They refused to offer sacrifice at the pagan altar in the manner officially prescribed for Roman citizens. Because of this Caracalla desired their death but was smitten by an illness and cured by them. The brothers were stoned to death in 284.
