Tolstoy on horseback
Prince Paul Troubetzkoy (Russian-Italian, 1866-1938)
Inscribed Paul Troubetzkoy and with the Roman Bronze Works N-Y- foundry mark bronze, greenish-brown patina. The second and last of Leo Tolstoy's equestrian statuettes by Prince Troubetzkoy, it was modelled twelve years after the first one at Count Tolstoy's estate of Jasnaya Poljana during a two-week sojourn of the sculptor in JuneJuly 1910, only four months before the writer's death occurred November 7th at Astapovo. Since 1898 Paul Troubetzkoy had portrayed the author numerous times in bronze, in painting, drawing and sketches - and a strong friendship had developed between them despite the difference in age. This cast was expressly made in the United States for Troubetzkoy' s American exhibitions during his stay there in the years 1911 - 1920. We are grateful to John S. Grioni for providing this catalogue note. The bronze will be included in his forthcoming Troubetzkoy catalogue raisonne.
