THE IMAGINARY FLOATING CITY OF KITEZH
Konstantin Ivanovich Gorbatov
Signed and dated 1913 in Russian, oil on canvas. The invisible city of Kitezh, a legendary town of unforgettable beauty, escaped destruction from the Mongols through being submerged at the bottom of a lake. It is said that on certain days, the golden domes of churches and the gilded tent shaped terems of its palaces can be faintly discerned through the clear waters, while the melodious pealing of bells reverberates to the surface of the lake. For Russians, the city of Kitezh signifies the spell of a lost past which returns to stir their imagination.
