THE CHILDREN OF THE THIRD DUKE AND DUCHESS OF LEUCHTENBERG ON A BALCONY
Wilhelm Hau (Vladimir Ivanovich Gau)
Signed and dated 1849, watercolour. Maximilian de Beauharnais, Third Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852), married Grand Duchess Maria Nicholaevna (1819-1878), daughter of Nicholas I in St. Petersburg in 1839. They settled in Russia and had the following children: Nicholas, Eugene, Sergei, George, Alexandra, Maria and Eugenia. Hau studied under Kiichelchen in Revel and then at the Academy of Art. After graduating in 1836 he travelled in Germany and Italy and was appointed a court painter by Nicholas I in 1840. His portraits exemplify the romanticism of the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
