A silver icon of St George, Grachev, St Petersburg, circa 1890 depicting the saint slaying the dragon, the oklad chased with foliate scrolls and flowerheads, inscribed in Cyrillic with the date 27 February, 1899 to the lower edge and with the dedication from the Russian social association of Reval on the reverse, struck to the lower edge with makers mark, 84 standard 32 by 27.5cm, 12½by 10⅞in CATALOGUE NOTE The icon is from the Russian social association in Reval (Talinn). The aim of the association was to unite its members on the basis of cultural and social interests and also to serve as a place of leisure. The society held musical evenings, theatre performances and public readings.
