The Mother of God of the Sign
late 16th century
The raised border with full-length figures of Ss. George, James and the desert ascetics Makarios and Onouphrios, the Virgin's halo tinged with orange overlying the sombre green of the background
This icon repeats, on a reduced scale, the iconography of the hallowed protective palladium of Novgorod which, dating from the 12th century, had darkened considerably by the late 16th century when this version was painted.
