RUSSIAN ICON OF "ALL CREATION REJOICES
Late 17th-Early 18th Century
Based on the liturgy of St. Basil, the Virgin and Christ Child depicted enthroned at the center in an aureole, a host of angels gathered around with a cathedral behind, symbolizing the rejoicing church, and with plants behind the cathedral, symbolizing the inarticulate creation; the lower part with groups of holy personages; the upper border with a Cyrillic prayer inscription and the sides painted with Ss. Catherine, Charlampios, Matrona and Andrew the Warrior.
