Petrouchka: Butterweek Fair
Alexandre Benois (1870-1960)
Signed lower left Alexandre Benois, watercolour and pen and ink on paper.
This is reminiscent of the architecture of St. Petersburg and of the traditional pre-Lenten carnival fair. The church of St. Isaac seen in the background also occurs in Benois's drop curtain in the version he did for the Royal Ballet in 1957. Benois made several variations of his original 1912 decor and costumes for different companies throughout the world. This is a decor, possibly, for Act I of Petrouchka.
