The cover painted with the Orlov coat-of-arms surmounted by the coronet of a count and heraldic helmets and held by two standard-bearers standing on an architectural plinth, incorporating a ribbon bearing the motto Fortitudine et Constantia, with river-landscape background, the sides with hunting, fishing, shooting and falconry scenes, the base with buildings in a river-landscape. The interior to the cover with a portrait of Count Grigory Grigorevich Orlov depicted in a casual pose dressed in an embroidered blue dressing-gown and holding a letter in his left hand, signed with the initials of Andrei Chernov, in the lower right corner. The gold mounts to the cover with basse-taille blue enamel Greek key-pattern, the corners chased with scrolls and husks, the thumbpiece chased with a shell and foliage, the box in simulated cage mounts with blue enamelled ovolo and bright-cut patterns (restoration to left side, two haircracks to base)
