A MONUMENTAL ICON OF THE CREATION AND THE FALL
North Russian, c.1600
Painted in muted colours on a sand-coloured ground, the composition divided into four tiers:
God the Father is depicted in the Heavenly Universe within an elaborate system of interlocking mandorla, flanked by angels; the mandorla also supporting the Cross and the Etimasia; He divides
the day and night by creating the sun and the moon; He creates the Heaven and Earth and all the creatures ; the division between good and evil represented by the open mouth of Hades into which the fallen angels and devils were thrown; God creates Adam and Eve and is seen resting on the seventh day.
The entry into and banishment from the Garden of Eden, with Adam and Eve arriving naked and leaving through a
portal, their nakedness covered with animal hides.
Adam and Eve within their tombs, whilst their descendants toil the earth for their bread; the slaying of Abel by his brother Cain.
