ODESSA -- BOSSOLI, Carlo (1815-1884). A Collection of Views of Odessa. [?Basel: by A. Braun, n.d. but c.1840s.]

11 lithographs (of 15), (c.240 x c.300mm), on laid paper with deckle edges (c.400 x c. 490mm), by A. Braun after C. Bossoli, bilingual captions in Russian and French. (Mostly marginal soiling, spotting and wear.)

An excellent group of views of Odessa by one of the great artists of the region. Carlo Bossoli was born in Lugano and spent most of his youth in Odessa. Under the patronage of Count Vorontsov, Bossoli travelled extensively in Italy, Turkey, Malta, central Europe and Morocco; he went to the Crimea in 1855 to cover the war, and produced The Beautiful Scenery, which includes some of the greatest first-hand illustrations of the subject. The views include: the Sabaneev Bridge, Preobrazhenskii Square, Count Vorontsov House, Novikov House and Bridge, the Theatre, the Colonnade, the Port Quarantine, the Boulevard, and others. (11)
